  1. NH3 a colourless pungent-smelling gas about 
  2. two-thirds as dense as air. It is used mainly 
  3. to produce nitrogenous fertilizers. Ammonia 
  4. is produced by the Haber and cyanamide 
  5. processes. It is soluble in water, forming 
  6. ammonium hydroxide, NH4OH. The solution is 
  7. strongly alkaline, and forms crystalline 
  8. salts on neutralization with acids. In 
  9. aquatic organisms and some insects, 
  10. nitrogenous waste (from breakdown of amino
  11. acids and so on) is excreted in the form of
  12. ammonia, rather than urea as in mammals.
